AI Chatbots Give Teens Dangerous Nutrition Advice, Study Finds

Popular AI tools, when prompted for weight loss plans for overweight teens, consistently generate meal plans that are dangerously low in calories and nutritionally unbalanced. A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition reveals that chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and others provide advice that could interfere with adolescent growth, bone development, and even lead to disordered eating.

The Problem with AI-Generated Diets

Researchers at Istanbul Atlas University tested five widely used AI chatbots by asking them to create three-day nutrition plans for four fictional 15-year-olds – two overweight, two obese, with both male and female profiles. The resulting meal plans were consistently deficient in carbohydrates while being excessively high in protein and fat. On average, the AI-generated diets contained approximately 695 fewer calories per day than those designed by registered dietitians.

This is especially concerning given that adolescence is a critical period for physical and cognitive development. Restrictive or unbalanced diets can disrupt these processes, potentially leading to long-term health consequences. As nutrition scientist Betül Bilen explains, “There was very little scientific evidence about whether the meal plans generated by these tools are nutritionally appropriate for growing teenagers.”

Why This Matters: Teens Are Already Using AI for Health Advice

The study’s findings are particularly relevant because 64% of U.S. teens report using AI chatbots, primarily for information gathering and schoolwork. While definitive data on teens specifically seeking dietary advice from AI is limited, anecdotal evidence suggests it’s happening. Registered dietitian Stephanie Kile notes that some of her patients actively prefer AI-generated advice, even when it contradicts professional guidance. These patients often exhibit resistance to healthier recommendations, stating, “I believe you, I just don’t think it applies to me… And that’s why I side with the chatbot reasoning.”

The Risks Extend Beyond Calorie Deficits

The danger isn’t solely about insufficient calories. AI lacks the nuance to account for individual health conditions, socioeconomic factors, and family dynamics – all critical considerations for a teen’s dietary plan. Moreover, overly restrictive AI-driven diets can damage a teen’s relationship with food, increasing the risk of disordered eating behaviors.

What Experts Say

Public health researcher Stephanie Partridge emphasizes that teens should never attempt restrictive diets without professional supervision. She points out that “Young people should not be undertaking any sort of restrictive eating, unless it’s in a supervised way with health professionals.” Rebecca Raeside of the University of Sydney adds that while AI can be a supplemental tool, teens are often aware of its limitations and use it alongside other reliable sources.

The core takeaway is clear: relying on AI chatbots for nutrition advice, especially for vulnerable populations like teenagers, carries significant risks. While the technology evolves rapidly, it currently lacks the expertise and compassion necessary to guide healthy eating habits.
