George Gaylord Simpson: How One Paleontologist Rewrote the Rules of Evolution

George Gaylord Simpson didn’t just study fossils. He used them to rewrite the history of life on Earth. Born in Chicago in 1902 and later dying in Tucson in 1984, Simpson became the architect of a new understanding of how species move, change, and survive across deep time.

His career wasn’t a straight line. It was a jagged path through museums, battlefields, and lecture halls that ended up redefining evolutionary theory for the entire scientific community.

The Early Years and Mammalian Fragments

Simpson got his PhD from Yale in 1926. His thesis focused on Mesozoic mammals. That’s a mouthful for creatures from the age of dinosaurs, where physical evidence is scarce. Most of what we know about them comes from lonely fragments of jaws and teeth.

He dug through the Peabody Museum in Yale and the British Museum in London. The work was tedious. He produced dense quarto monographs on these collections. But it worked. It made him a reputation as a serious worker in mammalian paleontology.

In 1927, he moved to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He stayed for thirty years. The first fifteen were explosive. He published about 150 scientific papers. Most were on mammals. A few touched on lower vertebrates, but the focus was clear.

Early on, he looked at Florida’s Neogene and Pleistocene fauna. The Pleistocene Epoch started about 2.6 million years ago and ended roughly 11,700 years ago. It’s the ice age era we recognize. But his real passion was older. Much older.

He studied Cretaceous mammals in Mongolia and North America. Specifically, the Paleocene fauna. The Paleocene Epoch began around 65.5 million years ago and ended about 55.8 million years ago. This period immediately followed the extinction of the dinosaurs. It was a blank slate.

This led to a major work on the Fort Union Formation in Montana. They found about 50 mammals there. Primitive types. Diverse types. This breadth of study resulted in a detailed classification of mammals that is still standard today.

South America and Isolation

Why did Simpson go to South America in the early 1930s? Because the fauna there was weird. Quite unlike anything on other continents. The Neogene and Pleistocene forms were known. But the earlier history? A mystery.

Simpson made three expeditions to Patagonia. He collected new material. He re-studied old specimens. The goal was simple. Unpack the early history of Neogene mammals in South America.

The effort worked. The history became vastly better known. He published several dozen papers on these forms in the late 1930s. Two volumes later summarized their early history.

This isolation in South America became a recurring theme in his work. He was fascinated by how species exist in isolation and how they eventually connect.

War, Taxonomy, and The Meaning of Evolution

World War II interrupted the research. Simpson did staff work for the U.S. Army, mostly in North Africa. When he returned to the American Museum, things changed. He became curator in charge of the active department of paleontology. He also became a professor at Columbia University.

The administrative load cut into his research time. But his productivity didn’t drop.

His interests spread. He started applying mathematical methods to paleontology. He co-authored a work on quantitative zoology. He looked at successive faunas across continental areas. This led to studies on intercontinental migrations of animal species.

Taxonomy and classification are tightly linked to evolution. He gave a thorough consideration of classification principles in his mammal work. In 1961, he published a volume on The Principles of Animal Taxonomy.

Then came the big one. A series of lectures published in 1949 as The Meaning of Evolution. It discussed the philosophical implications of accepting evolutionary theory. It attracted worldwide attention.

After the war, geneticists, systematists, and paleontologists renewed their study of evolutionary theory. Simpson took a major part in that study. His principal publications in that area were Tempo and Mode in Evolution (1944) and Major Features of Evolution (1953).

These books argued that evolution isn’t just random drift. It has patterns. It has speed. It has structure.

The Later Years

In 1958, Simpson left New York City. He spent a decade as an Alexander Agassiz Professor of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. Then he moved to Tucson, Arizona.

He became a professor of geosciences at the University of Arizona. He retired in 1982. He didn’t stop writing.

Later works include Splendid Isolation: The Curious History of South American Mammals (1980). This title says it all. Isolation matters. It drives evolution. He also wrote Why and How: Some Problems and Methods in Historical Biology (1980) and Fossils and the History of Life (1983).

He died in 1984. But the framework he built remains. We still look at the gaps in the fossil record and try to fill them with logic, math, and a deep respect for the strange, isolated paths life takes.

Did he solve everything? Probably not. But he gave us the tools to ask the right questions. The questions that matter.
