Volcanoes erupt not only because there is hot rock under the earth’s crust. There is a plumbing system. Geologists call these deep reservoirs magma chambers. They form where magma rises from the earth’s mantle through weak areas in the earth’s crust.
Think of it like building up the pressure inside a sealed bottle. Magma accumulates in these underground cavities. There it is waiting. Then it pushes back.
These chambers are formed at different depths. Some are very shallow. Others are several kilometers below the surface. This depth is important. It changes the explosiveness of volcanic eruptions. It affects which gases get out and how fast.
When the magma rises, the gases are transported with it. water vapor. carbon dioxide. Sulfur dioxide. The chamber acts like a storage tank. The pressure rises. Eventually, something gives.
Not all volcanoes have visible chambers. Some of them are deeply hidden. Others are closer to the surface. But without this reservoir, continuous eruptions would not occur. Just a quick pop, maybe.
So when you hear that a volcano is “charging,” it’s probably because the volcano’s chamber is filling up. This is the first step toward an event.
